Juniors exit after a great display

MJunster Junior Cup Semi-final.

The Fermoy Junior Team who lost 4-1 to Janesboro in the Munster Junior Cup Semi-final in Turners Cross.

Janesboro ( Limerick )  4.    Fermoy    1.

The magic of the cup deserted the  Juniors last weekend as they

exited the Munster Junior Cup at the hands of a
very strong Janesboro side. It was the Limerick side that
started strong and they took the game to us from the first whistle. The sense
of occasion seemed to get to our lads and we took a while to settle in. By the
time we did we were lucky to be still on level terms. Janesboro’s quick winger,
Shane Waters, had an effort on goal that was just wide and Liam Coleman was
relieved to see a header rebound off the post and into his hands. We eventually
settled into the game and had a few attacks of our own. After some nice build
up play Alan Baragry ran on to a pass from Brendan O’Hagan but was unable to
connect properly with his shot and saw it saved. The opening goal came after 20
minutes. Mark Kenny delivered a free into the box and when the ball broke Dave
Chambers was on hand to smash it home. We almost doubled our lead minutes later
when Alan McCormack was put through on goal. He looked to have been dragged
back but stayed on his feet to get his shot away but it was saved. Janesboro
got back on level terms just after the half hour mark when their striker hooked
the ball back over his head and beyond Liam Coleman.

Again it was the Limerick side

who started the second half the stronger and took the game to us. Liam Coleman
was in fine form though and kept them at bay with some good saves. They did
take the lead after 15 minutes of the half when their centre back latched onto
a half-cleared corner to score from 10 yards out. The turning point in momentum
came just after this. Substitute Cathal Chambers was put through on goal when
he was assaulted by the Janesboro keeper. Surprisingly neither the referee, his
assistants nor the fourth official saw this!!! When decisions like this go
against you it’s hard to stay focused and we were punished for it. In the
minutes our concentration lapsed Janesboro scored 2 quick goals on the break
and killed off the game. It is credit to this team though that even at 4-1 down
they were fighting for every ball and pressuring the Janesboro players right to
the final whistle.

Coming up against a team boasting
8 players with League of Ireland was always going to be a tough task but the
players showed great character to hold their own against them. It was a
magnificent run in this competition but unfortunately it had to come to an end.
With 2 cups and a league still to play for there’s no reason this team can’t
finish the season with some trophies.
