Seniors continue their good league form.
Fermoy 2 – 2 Mayfield United, Senior League.
Mayfield United were the visitors to Carrig Park on Saturday last in this Senior League Division 1 league tie. With the pitch in pristine condition and playing conditions near perfect Fermoy dominated for much of the game and were good value for their 4 – 2 win. In fact, but for some good saves from the visiting keeper, the post, near misses, goal-line clearances and missed opportunities the scoreline could and should have been more favourable for Fermoy.
As early as the 2nd minute Leon Roche had the ball in the visitors net but the referee disallowed the goal for pushing and again in the 15th minute another Leon header, from a Johnny Hurley cross, was cleared off the line. Then Kennedy put Kurt Wheeler through in the 25 minute but his powerful shot was tipped to the post by the keeper. Finally in the 28th minute a dangerous Johnny Hurley free kick found Kurt and this time the keeper had no chance with his low drive. At this stage Fermoy had complete control forcing numerous corners and could have had a few more goals. But as can happen, Mayfield broke from one of those attacking situations and levelled the scores at one all. Fermoy continued to press and a handball by the Mayfield defender saw him dismissed with a straight Red and Kurt duly converted the resulting penalty. Then just on the stroke of half-time another dangerous cross by Johnny was headed to the net by Leon to give Fermoy a 3 – 1 halftime lead.
The second half was much the same as the first with the Blues completely dominating and creating chance after chance and again some good lat ditch defending and goalkeeping kept the score at 3 – 1 until in the 65th minute a great through ball by Kurt found Kennedy who confidently slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 4 -1. With legs tiring a free into the Fermoy box found the Mayfield forward who headed home to make the final score 4 – 2.
